DESCRIPTION

On June 28, 2024, the United States Supreme Court issued a decision in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, holding that courts can exercise their independent judgment when interpreting the meaning of ambiguous federal statutes. The decision overruled Chevron, U.S.A. v. Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc. and upended decades of precedent under the Chevron doctrine, which permitted courts to defer to agency interpretation of ambiguous laws.

Each year, our Law Review hosts a symposium to discuss a challenging and polarizing area in the law. On Friday, February 14, 2025, we will be hosting a symposium titled, “The End of Chevron Deference: Navigating Federal Administrative Law in the Wake of Loper Bright.” The symposium will have four panels that focus on: (1) an overview of the Loper Bright decision; (2) Energy, Infrastructure, and the Environment; (3) Finance; and (4) Health Care and Life Sciences. This symposium is designed to foster a discussion of the likely implications of Loper Bright and create a space to explore this new era of administrative law. The first panel will introduce the Loper Bright decision and lay an educational foundation for the remaining three panels, which will concentrate on specific areas of law and policy affected by this decision. The symposium will be an all-day event at our campus in Newark, New Jersey.
