DESCRIPTION

On June 29, 2023, the United States Supreme Court issued a joint opinion in Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President and Fellows of Harvard College and Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. University of North Carolina, holding that the affirmative action admissions systems used by Harvard College and the University of North Carolina are unlawful under the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. This Symposium is designed to foster a discussion of the doctrines that have enabled or hindered race-based considerations and the legal ramifications of the Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. opinion for the landscapes of education and elsewhere.

The Symposium will be an all-day event at our campus in Newark, New Jersey. There will be four panels that focus on: (1) How to respond to Students for Fair Admissions, Inc.; (2) Grutter and Bakke in retrospect; (3) Race-based considerations outside of higher education; and (4) The color blindness paradigm. The Symposium has gathered a diverse group of voices to explore these topics at this important moment to describe where we are now, where we have been, and where we can go from here.

CLE MATERIALS WILL BE AVAILABLE UNTIL MARCH 1
