Professor Michael Coenen

Michael Coenen, Marino, Tortorella and Boyle Professor of Law

Seton Hall University School of Law has announced the appointment of Professor Michael Coenen as the inaugural Marino, Tortorella & Boyle Professor of Law.  Kevin H. Marino, Esq. ‘84, and his wife, Rita Marino, M.A.E. ’94 established the prestigious endowed professorship through a generous $1 million donation.  It is named in honor of Marino’s law firm and his distinguished partners, John D. Tortorella, Esq. ‘99, and John A. Boyle, Esq. ‘00, both alumni of Seton Hall Law.

The endowed chair was created to attract and retain high-caliber professors, further enhancing the quality of education at Seton Hall Law.  Former Interim Dean Cornwell shared his enthusiasm for the appointment, commenting, “I am pleased to announce that Michael Coenen has been named the Marino, Tortorella & Boyle Professor of Law, effective July 1. Michael’s stellar record as a scholar and teacher speaks for itself, as does his outstanding service to the Law School and University.”

Upon learning of his appointment, Professor Coenen remarked, “My initial reaction was one of immense gratitude—to Kevin and Rita Marino for their generosity in supporting the chair, to my dean for recommending my appointment to the chair, and to the Provost for approving it. I also felt humbled and honored by the appointment.”

Looking ahead, Coenen expressed his enthusiasm for his new role: “I’m excited to keep doing whatever I can to help the Law School and University thrive. I feel very fortunate to be a part of this institution, and I’m excited to keep trying to do my own part to be an effective teacher, scholar, and contributor to our community.”

Kevin Marino also voiced his confidence in Coenen’s appointment, stating, “Professor Coenen is a renowned legal scholar and an accomplished law professor, and we are thrilled he will be serving as the Marino, Tortorella & Boyle Professor of Law.”

The Marino, Tortorella & Boyle Professorship emphasizes Seton Hall Law’s commitment to providing exceptional legal education and fostering an environment where distinguished faculty can thrive.  Marino’s donation sets a precedent for other law firms and benefactors to contribute to the continued excellence of Seton Hall Law.  Please join us in congratulating Professor Coenen Michael for this well-deserved honor!
