International and Study Abroad Programs

Seton Hall Law's international study programs are rooted in a dedication to scholarly learning, practical training and the belief that in our globalized community, all students will derive significant benefit from an exposure to the practice of international law. We offer legal education courses in human rights law, comparative law, and international law that draw on the respective region's unique culture and legal practices.

Louvain Program

Third year students have the unique opportunity to spend a semester abroad at Université Catholique de Louvain in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium (Louvain Program). As with our other international offerings, the Louvain Program is rooted in a dedication to scholarly learning, practical training and the belief that in our globalized community, all students will derive significant benefit from an exposure to the practice of international law.

Students in the Louvain Program will be abroad in the fall semester of their third year and enrolled in up to 14 credits at the Université Catholique de Louvain, Faculty of Law and Criminology. Students may choose from 30+ courses taught in English.

Dean Acheson Legal Scholar Program

The Dean Acheson Legal Scholar program provides recent graduates and third-year law students with an externship opportunity at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). This prestigious program offers students an extraordinary opportunity to engage in substantive research and work in the chambers of a judge of the Court of Justice, an Advocate General of the Court of Justice, or with a Judge of the General Court. The Court of Justice is the highest court of the European Union that interprets European Union law and ensures its equal application across all states of the European Union.

There are two possible Dean Acheson Legal Scholar periods: fall term or spring term (for less than 90 days). Seton Hall University Law School has the privilege of being one of the schools in the United States selected to participate in the Dean Acheson Scholar program and permitted to nominate three candidates every April 1. We have had the honor and privilege in the past to have fifteen students from our school selected for the program.

Dean Acheson scholars are unpaid, and the Court of Justice of the European Union does not make any funds available to support Dean Acheson scholars. Dean Acheson scholars are responsible for the full cost of their transportation, room and board while participating in the Dean Acheson Scholar program. Learn more about the Externship at the Court of Justice of the European Union here.
