Center for Universal Education and the AI task force. This collaboration will build
upon research in Professor Bernstein’s acclaimed book Unwired, which addresses the impact of addictive technologies on kids. It will also connect
to her current work on AI companion bots, a focus of her new book project, Technologies of Loneliness.
As a Visiting Fellow, Bernstein will join the Brookings Institution’s other leading
experts from all over the world who provide the highest quality research, policy recommendations,
and analysis on a full range of public policy issues. An expert in law and technology,
information privacy, and intellectual property, Professor Bernstein is nationally
recognized for her work examining users' interactions with new technologies across
diverse legal fields.
“AI companions are one of the most existential new threats faced by technology users,
particularly children.” Bernstein said. “I look forward to collaborating with the
Brookings Institution to deepen our understanding of the threat and to present legal,
policy and practical solutions to counter it.”
Professor Jenny-Brooke Condon, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, said about Bernstein’s appointment: “Professor Bernstein is addressing some of the most important questions society faces regarding AI’s impact, particularly on children. Seton Hall Law is thrilled to see the Brookings Institution recognize her cutting-edge work and indispensable voice on these issues.”
