For all papers which are intended to satisfy the Advanced Writing Requirement, the professor must agree that the topic is appropriate for advanced legal writing credit. After completion of the paper, the professor must certify to the Assistant Dean for Academic Services that the paper satisfies the Advanced Writing Requirement. At the option of the professor, this certification may be based on revisions which are made after the student has received a final grade in the seminar. Revisions made after the conclusion of the seminar shall not result in any change in the final grade.

Students may also receive AWR certification for comments written for Law Review or the Journal of Legislation and Public Policy. The faculty members supervising the comment must certify that the comment satisfies the AWR requirement as specified on our website.

Course Cancellation

The Law School reserves the right to cancel any course. Students will be notified by phone or e-mail in the event a course is cancelled.

Course Descriptions/Prerequisites

Students are responsible for checking course pre/co-requisites.

Course Withdrawal

A student is permitted to withdraw from a course up until the day of the scheduled examination, or if self- scheduled, the last day of examinations. In the case of a seminar, a student may withdraw up to the day in which the paper is due. However, no student may attempt more than 98 credits of academic work, including retaken courses. A course from which a student withdraws with the approval of the Dean of Students does not count as an attempted course. Notwithstanding the above, any student who is involuntarily withdrawn or who withdraws, with or without approval, from more than 20 credits will be automatically dismissed.

Students seeking to withdraw from one course while retaining another after the Drop/Add period must file a Course Withdrawal Form with the Office of Enrollment Services. A student withdrawing from any course, including externships, journals, clinics, moot court or Independent Research will receive a grade of "WD" (Withdrawal).

Credit Load/Residency Requirement

A student is not permitted to register for more than six credits (includes externships and intersession courses) during the summer session.

Drop/Add Period

The Drop/Add period starts on Saturday, April 5 until Tuesday, June 3. No student will receive academic credit for any course(s) that he or she is not officially registered for by 11:59 p.m., Tuesday, June 3. Students are entitled to a full refund of tuition for courses dropped within the Drop/Add period.

Equivalency Courses

Only one course of each set of courses listed below may be used towards graduation requirements:

SET 1
Negotiation Skills: Civil Litigation (PRMD9234) or Advanced Negotiation Skills (PRMD9226) or Negotiation Skills: Criminal Litigation (PRMD9236)

Journals

Members/editors should register for journal credit based on their below journal status.

  • New journal members register for a one credit member for both the fall and spring semesters.
  • Continuing journal members (second year on journal) register for zero member credits for the fall semester (members must register for the journal even though they receive no credit) and for a one credit member for the spring semester for a total of three credits over four semesters.
  • Editors (students on the editorial board only) register for a one credit editor for the fall semester and for a two-credit editor for the spring semester for a total of five credits over four semesters.
Independent Research

Students interested in registering for Independent Research must complete the online Independent Research Approval Form and obtain the appropriate signatures of their faculty advisor and the Independent Research Committee members. Upon submission of the approval form, students will be registered for the course, but in no case will any student be registered later than the end of the Drop/Add period (first week of the semester). It is the student's responsibility to ensure that the completed form is returned to the Office of Enrollment Services before the end of the Drop/Add period.

Note, Requires Minimum GPA of 3.0

Limitations On Distance Learning

All law students are limited to 15 credits of distance learning courses that can be used towards their law degree. Distance learning courses are indicated in the registration handbook and can be synchronous or asynchronous.

Other Holds

There are several types of holds which may affect your registration status, namely: bursar, academic, transcript, health services and financial aid. Prior to registration, it is strongly recommended that you go online to check if you have any type of hold on your account. If one does exist, you should contact the appropriate department to resolve the hold.

Outstanding Tuition Balance/Financial Holds

You must resolve any unpaid balance with the Bursar's Office before registering. Financial holds are automatically placed on your account regardless of the amount due. In addition, all monies must be received before your registration date, regardless of the source from which the tuition is being paid. If you have a current balance, you will be blocked from registering for courses and will be referred to the Bursar's Office. This will result in having to restart the registration process (if cleared by the Bursar to register) and will lower your chances of enrolling in your desired course(s).

Remote Access for Weekend Students

Weekend students may register to attend weekday classes remotely if the class is listed as “Weekend Remote Option.” Unless otherwise stated, a maximum of 20% of enrolled students can attend the class remotely. Any course attended remotely counts towards the 15-credit maximum for online/remote classes. To apply to take a course that is being offered with this option, you must submit the Remote Attendance Form at least two weeks before the start of the semester, or within 2 days of registering for the course, whichever is later. The Weekend Director will notify you if you have been approved for remote attendance. Please note that any class taken in the weekday program follows the weekday academic calendar, including semester breaks, start/ending dates, and, most importantly, exam schedules.
