President Nominates Seton Hall Law Alumnus PauL B. Matey to the Third Circuit

Newark, NJ – Filling the first of three vacancies in the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, President Donald J. Trump announced his intent to nominate Seton Hall Law alumnus, Paul B. Matey ’01. Mr. Matey is currently part of the Executive Leadership team at University Hospital in Newark serving as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary.

Prior to University Hospital, Matey was Deputy Chief Counsel to New Jersey Governor Christopher J. Christie ’87, served as Assistant United States Attorney in New Jersey, and was an associate with Kellogg, Huber, Hansen, Todd, Evans & Figel. Sitting on the Third Circuit will be a kind of homecoming for Matey, who clerked with the Honorable Robert E. Cowen after clerking on the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey for Judge John C. Lifland.

“Paul is a superb nomination to one of the most respected courts in the country,” says Dean Kathleen M. Boozang, who noted that he was Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review and graduated summa cum laude. “We are thrilled to have Seton Hall Law represented at this level in the federal judiciary.  Given his immense talents and the breath of his legal experience, there is no question but that he will serve with distinction.”

She concluded, “And what a year for Seton Hall Law! Paul’s nomination is the third high-level Presidential appointment of alums, the other’s being Craig Carpenito, ’00 named as US Attorney for the District of New Jersey and Jay Town ’98 as US Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama.”

Matey received his B.A. from the University of Scranton.
