  1. Identify situations in which important employee protections – including antidiscrimination, leave, and wage and hour protections – may be implicated in employment decisions

  2. Analyze potential legal claims and defenses arising in an array of work-related circumstances

  3. Apply risk-management strategies to address or reduce potential legal risks


This course explores the core doctrines that govern the employment relationship, including the at-will employment doctrine and its principal objections, antidiscrimination protections, health and familial leave protections, wage and hour laws, employee privacy, and diversity in the workplace. Classroom exercises allow students to test their understanding of the core concepts through guided discussion topics and analysis of fact-patterns. Upon completion of this course students will be able to summarize key sources of employee rights in the workplace, appreciate the definitions of “employee” and “employer” and the corresponding coverage limitations on employment protections, and articulate the role of human resources and management professionals in complying with employment law mandates.
